Charge: Upscale Mexican & Italian fare

Corpus Delicti: El Barzon is the Andiamo’s of Mexican food: high priced and bland. Anglos and wanna-be Hipsters seem to love it, since they are there in great numbers while there is tellingly not a Mexican patron in sight. Neither is there any guacamole or ceviche, which along with chocolate, are the 3 great contributions of Mexico to world cuisine.

As far as I can tell, El Barzon’s only attractions are its spotless floors and relatively bare walls devoid of the obligatory Corona posters which adorn its competitors’ interiors, neither of which are enough to tempt me away from the far cheaper and tastier Mexican food offerings just down the street, or from the vastly superior Italian fare of Giovanni’s.

Opinion: Live a little and try something more authentic before Donald Trump builds his wall.

Defendant:

Torino

Charge: Modern American/European Cuisine

Venue: Tastefully understated, modern décor and lovely bar. Perhaps the most chic venue in Metro Detroit.

Fees: Punitively expensive. Madison Avenue prices for 9 Mile view.

Bailiffs: The staff is extremely attentive and professional, although for the price, should be much more knowledgeable about the food and drink.

Corpus Delicti: If only the food matched the setting. The prix fixe menu is overly ambitious and unforgiving of patron idiosyncrasies. The presentation of the dishes was flawless, but the taste failed to meet expectations. Some of the appetizers were delicious (foie gras and matsutake), some average (Brussels sprouts) . Same with the main course of duck, which had a delicious sauce, but was tough and inedible (although the monkfish was excellent). Dessert was also disappointing (an odd butternut squash-blackberry mash-up). To make matters worse, the portions were so ridiculously small that even my 105 lbs. wife asked to get pizza after dinner. The wine pairing option was very uneven as to quality.

Opinion: A restaurant cannot survive on ambience alone.
